Ehden Lebanese American Club Scholarship
The Ehden Lebanese American Club has had a presence in the Greater Waterbury since 1915. It has been a registered social, cultural, and charitable organization with the state of Connecticut since 1948.
The Ehden Lebanese American Club has a proud tradition of fostering social involvement in the community, showcasing our ethnic heritage and doing charitable works throughout the state and to Lebanon. Our organization decided to add an educational incentive to the young people of our community. The Ehden Lebanese American Club has put forth this scholarship to encourage excellence in academic endeavors and foster involvement in the Lebanese-American Community in Connecticut. The scholarship is awarded to child of a club member who is a graduating high school senior.
Youssef Macary Memorial Scholarship
Youssef Macary was a resident of Waterbury, Connecticut since 1962. Born in Zgharta, Lebanon, he immigrated to this country after working his way through school in Brazil. He was fluent in Arabic, Portuguese, English, and French. He was a tireless worker and supporter for his family, the Ehden Lebanese American Club and the entire Lebanese community in Connecticut.
In addition, what many people don't know is that he was a great advocate of education. He put his own children through college, sponsored a number of graduate students from Lebanon, and was involved in local parent-teacher associations, citywide parent-teacher councils and advocate groups for gifted education well after his own children left the public school system. His family has put forth this scholarship in his name so that his legacy of sacrifice and his love of education and learning may continue. As he once said, "When one of our own succeeds, we all succeed." The scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving high school senior of Lebanese descent. Preference is giving to students pursuing a career in the mathematics, science or engineering fields.
